Purpose

To provide guidance on selecting appropriate vehicles fit for purpose.

Scope

This guideline applies to all Company staff including- contractors, sub-contractors, apprentices, trainees, work experience students or volunteers.

Guidelines

When a new vehicle is being selected, consideration should be given to:

  • a minimum safety specification
  • the environment in which the vehicle will be operating
  • the nature of the tasks for which the vehicle will be used
  • the appropriateness for the vehicle’s operational role
  • the tasks that a vehicle operator will be required to perform
  • the physical characteristics and capabilities of drivers or operators who will use the vehicle
  • environmental factors
  • the availability of local servicing dealerships
  • refuelling needs.

Minimum safety specification

Company applies a mandatory minimum safety specification when approving new vehicles for inclusion in the Queensland Government fleet.

This should not stop agencies from also considering the safety specification of vehicles being ordered. Some vehicle safety features for consideration include:

  • advanced vehicle braking and stability systems. e.g. electronic stability control (ESC, electronic brake force distribution (EBD) and emergency brake assist (EBA)
  • collision warning and avoidance systems e.g. autonomous emergency braking (AEB), adaptive cruise control (ACC), blind spot monitoring (BSM) and lane departure monitoring (LDM)
  • reversing collision avoidance aids (reverse parking sensors and cameras)
  • seat belt pre-tensioners on all seating positions
  • seat belt reminders on all seating positions
  • driver and front passenger airbags, side airbags, side curtain airbags and knee
  • airbags
  • adjustable head restraints on all seating positions
  • best-in-class crash test rating results (e.g. ANCAP or Euro NCAP test results)
  • cargo barriers for all station wagons, goods carrying vans, 4WD wagons and people movers.
