Scope
This procedure applies to all workers of our company and visitors including contractors, volunteers, work experience students, trainees and clients.
Purpose
The purpose of this procedure is to provide guidelines and information to effectively manage hazardous chemicals and dangerous goods within the company.
Procedure
If you discover a fire:
- Sound the alarm and alert other personnel
- Attend to human life if possible without placing yourself in danger
- Notify the Emergency Service (Fire Brigade) on ‘000′
- When calling ‘000′, stay on the phone until told to hang up.
- Give the operator an accurate description of where the fire is
- Use the fire extinguishers if safe to do so and only if you have been trained to do so.
- Only address a fire if it is shorter than you
- If possible switch off power points and close doors behind you as you leave (in Office environments)
- Walk calmly and quickly to designated Form-Up (evacuation) point
- Remain at Form-Up (evacuation) point until the all-clear has been provided to you
- Act as a spotter for emergency vehicles if asked to do so
- Obey all instructions of the person in charge of the site at the time of the emergency
- Report the incident to the Workplace Health and Safety Officer
Definitions
Emergency Exit – designated exits at the company sites identified by ‘green’ signage with the word ‘EXIT’ written in white
PFE – Personal Fire Extinguisher
