Lifting and handling of materials is to be done in a safe and sensible manner so as not to cause injury. 

 If the material/item is considered too heavy or awkward to handle by one person, assistance in the way of team lifting, a crane or other suitable mechanical device is to be used – A guideline of maximum weight is 25kg. 

 The PCBU shall ensure all workers are aware of correct manual handling techniques by providing training. 

 The objective of this section is to: 

  • Prevent the occurrence of injury and/or reduce the severity of injuries resulting from manual handling tasks on construction workplaces.
  • Require the identification, assessment and control of risks arising from manual handling activities on construction workplaces.
  • Whenever possible use a mechanical lifting device to assist the lift.
  • Get additional help if necessary (do not risk it!).
  • Plan the lift.
  • Check the weight of the load.
  • Ensure the planned travel route is free from obstructions.
  • Ensure the place planned for load placement is free of obstructions.
