A safety committee (HSC) must be formed where more than 5 workers request the formation of a safety committee. The request should be made at the toolbox talk and entered in the records. Management shall set in play the processes for establishment of HSR and Committee. The meeting records shall reflect the request, and management shall commence the relevant process.
Health and safety committees are gaining recognition as a means of securing worker participation in health and safety management. The purpose of having a safety committee is not a group of “fix it people” but rather as a group of people who can review, discuss, and advise on safety matters. Provision of the “Consultation Process” can be engendered in the HSC.
Management shall determine and remove obstacles or barriers to participation and minimise those that cannot be removed (obstacles and barriers can include failure to respond to worker inputs of suggestions, language or literacy barriers, reprisals or threats of reprisals and policies or practices that our company or penalise workers participation), this shall be done by ensuring all stakeholders and workers are to participate in all consultation processes.
