Purpose

This procedure applies to all workers of our company and visitors including contractors, volunteers, work experience students, trainees and clients.

Scope

The purpose of this procedure is to provide guidelines and information to effectively manage the hazard of discovering unexploded ordnance.

Definitions

Ordnance – All munitions containing explosives, nuclear fission or fusion materials, and biological and chemical agents. This includes bombs and warheads; guided and ballistic missiles; artillery, mortar, rocket, and small-arms ammunition; all mines, torpedoes, and depth charges; demolition charges; pyrotechnics; clusters and dispensers; cartridge and propellant actuated devices; electro-explosive devices; clandestine and improvised explosive devices; and all similar or related items or components explosive in nature. means a name, in accordance with the nomenclature systems of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry or the Chemical Abstracts Service, or a technical name, that gives a chemical a unique identity.

Procedure

If the unexploded ordnance is discovered:

  • Leave it alone – do not touch
  • Contact the Site Supervisor
  • Cease work in the area and clear the area up to a minimum of a 100-metre radius (if possible)
  • Where possible obtain a description of the unexploded ordnance without disturbing it (for example; colour, length, features or markings)
  • Notify the police
  • Do not allow access into the restricted area
  • Wait until the police arrive and hand over the site to them
  • Do not enter the area until official clearance has been provided
  • Report the incident to your Workplace Health & Safety Officer
