Purpose
An untidy work area causes accidents, inefficiency and creates fire and other hazards. Use receptacles provided and remember that there is a place for everything and everything belongs in its place. Our company‘s primary objective is to maintain efficient, effective and zero harm work sites. These objectives start with sound housekeeping principles and procedures.
Scope
This policy applies to all employees, both office and site workers, of our company including contractors, sub-contractors, trainees, apprentices, work experience students, volunteers and clients.
Policy Statement
Housekeeping is a blanket term used to describe the process of keeping work areas in order, neat and tidy. Housekeeping also covers storage and stacking which must conform with recognised Safety Standards allowing for easy access and manual handling.
Interior
Workers must play their part in keeping the workplace and amenities clean and tidy.
- Place all scraps of food, empty drink bottles, cartons and cans in the bins provided.
- Grease, oil and other slip hazard materials shall not be allowed to accumulate in work areas.
- Materials and items shall be stored in proper receptacles.
- Tools and other gear must not be left in positions where they may fall onto or cause obstructions to other persons.
- Keep your work area clear of unwanted materials as your job progresses and clean up afterwards.
- Ensure that dining facilities are clean and hygienic at all times
- Personal storage areas are well maintained and secure
- Change rooms and shower facilities are cleaned regularly and that all facilities are in good working order
- Bins and biohazard receptacles are emptied in accordance with the company’s policies and procedures
- Workshops are to be kept in good working order meaning:
- floors to be kept clear and clean
- tools to be stored in designated areas
- ventilation to be checked regularly
- signage to be in good order and appropriate for the task
- all chemicals to be labelled appropriately and stored in accordance with SDS directions
- lighting to be sufficient for the working environment
- all rubbish is to be disposed of in accordance with our company and Environmental requirements
- trip hazards are either removed or isolated
Remember – all work areas, offices, storerooms, platforms, catwalks & access ways must be kept tidy and orderly.
Exterior
The environment creates constant hazards. The following steps are recommended:
- Prune branches and bushes to remove sharp protrusions
- Remove overhead dead branches and large fruit (eg Coconuts)
- Ensure a Residual Current Device protects electrical fittings
- Excavations over .900mm deep should be signed and fenced
- Dangerous vegetation should be avoided (cactus, poison ivy)
- Fencing should be secure, visible and in good order
- Irrigation systems are fitted with backflow prevention (unless not town water)
- Grass should be mown regularly
- Site inspections should be conducted regularly (at scheduled intervals) and maintenance reports submitted
- Spoils and refuse must be stockpiled at a secure, nominated zone, on all worksites
